
The System – Overview
Across much of the world water is managed as a series of separate problems.
Flood Defence, Drainage, Water Supply & Pollution.
But landscapes do not function in such fragments.
Water should connect soils, ecosystems, communities and economies into one planned living system.
This is not a Theory.
It is how natural ecological systems actually work.
Water moves across landscapes — through soils, rivers, living systems — integrating with everything it touches. Yet the systems designed to manage it municipally remain fragmented, often operating in isolation or against these wider natural processes.
Flooding, drought and pollution are not separate problems. They are the signals of misalignment. When governance, design and investment begins to operate in alignment with the scale that water actually moves; risks reduce, stability returns, and multiple values are created across the whole system.
Our question is not whether this system works.
It is whether we are prepared to align and work with it. This has to all be determined and implemented at a local level. This is a Statutory requirement under the Water Framework Directive.

The Proof in the Landscape
This landscape system is not theoretical.
Across the UK and internationally, projects already demonstrate how restoring natural water processes can reduce flood risk, improve water quality and strengthen local economies.
These examples show how landscapes can function when water, soil and communities are engaged as one system.
