Julian Jones of Water21 co-presented, produced, and co-funded the BBC programme Don’t Go Near the Water with the late singer Kirsty MacColl in June 1991, and built the UK’s first full domestic sustainable urban drainage system (SUDS—rainwater, grey-water and sewage water recycling system) for the purpose.

NOTE: The gravel planting medium used for planting reeds at Kirsty’s home slowly became less efficient after only a few years of use, while the soil-based reedbeds at ICI (built by Dr Lucian Gill of Oceans-ESU) continued to work efficiently, with an indefinite estimated lifetime for treating highly toxic effluent.
